Washington, D.C. — In response to the Supreme Court striking down the Colorado law forcing speech, Congressman Jeff Duncan (R-SC) released the following statement on 303 Creative LLC v. Elenis:

“The First Amendment is designed to protect people of faith’s ability to live out their beliefs in their day-to-day lives. This ruling reaffirms that the government has no right to coerce anyone to violate a deeply held religious belief. Colorado’s blatant attempt to impose laws that demean and discriminate against people of faith is a clear violation of our First Amendment freedoms and cannot stand. I celebrate with Lorie Smith of 303 Creative in having her rights upheld on June 30 and the impact this ruling will have on all believers moving forward.”

Background: Congressman Duncan joined Senator Ted Cruz and more than 30 colleagues in the House and Senate to file an amicus brief in 2021 asking the Court to protect First Amendment religious rights in this important case.
