NEWBERRY — Newberry College’s Department of Social & Behavioral Sciences and the Office of Diversity Education will present a forum on the aftermath of the 2015 Mother Emmanuel AME Church shooting, from the perspective of Charleston police and the AME church.
The event will be held April 7 at 7 p.m. at the Center for Teacher Education, 1121 Speers St. in Newberry.
“This will be a look inside of what the officers experienced right after the shooting, including the days that followed, and the perceived impact on churches in South Carolina and especially the AME Church,” said Cynthia L. Haynes Eshleman, assistant professor of criminal justice.
The forum will include Dr. Carrie Caudill, associate professor of psychology; the Rev. Ertha Bowman, pastor of Miller Chapel AME Church in Newberry; and Sgt. Anthony Gibson, Senior Officer Terry Cherry, Master Police Officer James Jackson, Officer Andre Wilson and Officer Arthur Lee of the Charleston Police Department.
The forum will be moderated by Haynes Eshleman, Dr. John Lesaine '07, assistant dean for student success, and Dr. Chris Sharp, assistant professor of criminal justice.
