Kim S. Miller Family Enterprise Institute of South Carolina Announces Second Annual Conference

The Kim S. Miller Family Enterprise Institute of South Carolina at Anderson University (FEISC) has announced that its second annual conference will be held on Thursday, November 3, 2022 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Hilton Garden Inn in Greenville, South Carolina. The title of the conference is “Rock on! Sustaining and Flourishing as a Family Enterprise and Family.”

The second annual conference will cover critical family enterprise topics such as ransomware, creative bonuses and compensation, sibling rivalry, building better boundaries at work/home, supporting non-family leaders, when family wants to leave the business or the family, and steps to building a sustainable business and sustainable family, plus many opportunities for peer learning and networking.

“We have some excellent conference speakers and they will focus our conversations exclusively on the health and sustainability of the business and the family,” said Brad Bechtold, executive director of the Institute.

According to Bechtold, family-owned enterprises are the backbone of the American economy. Studies have shown about 35 percent of Fortune 500 companies and 90 percent of American businesses are family-controlled and represent the full spectrum of American companies from small business to major corporations. Family-owned enterprise accounts for 64 percent of U.S. gross domestic product, generates 62 percent of the country's employment, and accounts for 78 percent of all new job creation.

Bechtold commented, “Whether large or small, a family enterprise is the oldest form of business and is generally defined as ‘any business in which two or more family members are involved and the majority of ownership lies within the family.’ The very essence of the definition, ‘family’ is what makes running a family business so complicated and challenging.

Bechtold says, “Our vision of the sustainability of most organizations, including transition planning for the next generation of ownership is very complex.” The Institute is the only ongoing professional organization specifically designed for family businesses in South Carolina and we are here to serve you! We foster learning, sharing and creative solutions regarding the many critical issues and problems faced by family enterprises.”
