Anderson University will begin its MLK Celebration Week with Alveda C. King, Ph.D., Monday, January 16, 2023, 10:10 a.m. in Henderson Auditorium.
Dr. Alveda King serves as Chair of the America First Policy Institute’s Center for the American Dream. She is the daughter of the late slain civil rights activist Rev. A. D. King and the niece of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., as well as a Christian evangelist; graduate of Aidan University; and is founder of Speak For Life and Alveda King Ministries (www.alvedaking.com). Dr. King is also an acclaimed author, was twice elected to the Georgia State House, is a past presidential appointee, 2021 recipient of the Presidential Lifetime Achievement Award, and is a film and music industry veteran. This event is open to the public.
Anderson University continues its MLK week of Celebration with a student-led question and answer event with Dr. Alveda King Tuesday, January 17, 2023, 6:30 p.m. in the G. Ross Anderson Jr. Student Center Theater. These events are free and open to the public.
Here is a detailed schedule of activities for the week:
Monday, January 16:
10:10 a.m. — MLK Worship Service (doors open up at 9:30 a.m.), Henderson AuditoriumDr. Alveda King book signing to follow. Students, faculty and staff will be involved in various volunteer opportunities after the worship service. Anderson University will be sending teams of volunteers out into the community throughout the week.
Tuesday, January 17:
11 a.m. — Awards Luncheon (By invitation only), Student Center Banquet Hall. Live music starts at 11 a.m.), luncheon will start at 11:30 a.m.
6:30 p.m. — Student Q & A with Dr. Alveda King, Student Center Theater. Doors open at 5:45 p.m.. A book signing will follow the event.
Wednesday, January 18:
10:10 a.m. — Rev. Anthony Thompson will be the chapel speaker in Henderson Auditorium. Rev. Thompson’s wife was tragically killed in the 2015 shootings at Mother Emanuel Church in Charleston, South Carolina.
5:30 p.m., 7:30 p.m. — MLK Basketball games at Abney Athletic Center.
Thursday, January 19:
Connect Club Martin Luther King Trivia Night, 6-7:30 p.m. in room 302 of the G. Ross Anderson Jr. Student Center.
Friday, January 20:
10:10 a.m. — Sherelle Ducksworth, new Anderson University College of Christian Studies faculty member, speaking in chapel, Henderson Auditorium.
